What is a Spirit Level?

A spirit level (or bubble level) is a tool used to check if a surface is perfectly horizontal (level) or vertical (plumb). It's an essential tool for construction, carpentry, and home improvement.

A traditional spirit level has a small glass vial with a bubble inside. If the bubble is centered between the lines, the surface is level. This online spirit level uses your phone's sensors to do the same thing, but with digital precision.

How to Use This Online Bubble Level

This online bubble level turns your phone into a precision spirit level. It uses your device's built-in sensors to check if a surface is level. No app installation is needed—it runs right in your browser.

Key Features

  • Instant Measurements: Get real-time angle readings as soon as you place your phone on a surface.
  • Two Modes: Use 'Surface Mode' for flat surfaces and 'Wall Mode' for vertical ones.
  • Simple Interface: The virtual bubble provides a clear visual guide, just like a real spirit level.
  • Zero Button: Calibrate the level to any surface or to account for a camera bump.
  • Audio Alerts: Get an audible beep when a surface is perfectly level.

A Note on Accuracy

While this online level is great for most DIY tasks, it's not a replacement for a professional, calibrated spirit level. The accuracy depends on your phone's sensors, and small bumps can affect the reading. For the best results, use the calibration techniques described below.

Understanding the Components

This online spirit level has two main modes: Surface and Wall. Here’s a quick guide to the components in each mode.

Surface Mode

  • Circular Dial: A bullseye level that shows the surface angle in all directions.
  • Main Bubble: The bubble in the circular dial. When it's in the center, your surface is level.
  • Vertical & Horizontal Levels: Two rectangular levels that show the pitch (front to back) and roll (left to right) angles.
  • Degree Display: Shows the exact angle of the surface in degrees.
Surface Wall Circular Dial Main Bubble Horizontal Level H-Bubble Vertical Level V-Bubble 8.0° 9.0° Zero Stop

Elements in Wall Mode

  • Wall Level Box: A classic spirit level interface for checking vertical surfaces.
  • Wall Bubble: The bubble in the wall level. Center it between the lines to find the perfect vertical angle.
  • Wall Degree: Shows the exact vertical angle in degrees.

How to level Surface using Spirit level online?

  1. Select 'Surface' Mode: Ensure the 'Surface' button is active in the mode slider.
  2. Place Device: Lay your smartphone or tablet flat on the surface you wish to measure.
  3. Surface Wall 0.0° 0.0° Zero Start 1. Select Surface Mode Surface to level Surface Wall 2.8° 1.5° Zero Start 2. Place it on Surface & click Start
  4. Observe Readings: The bubble and degree displays will show the tilt in real-time.
  5. Adjust Surface: Move or adjust the surface until the main bubble is centered within the circular dial, and both degree readings are 0.0°.
  6. Surface Wall 8.0° 9.0° Zero Stop 3. Observe Bubble & Readings Surface Wall 0.0° 0.0° Zero Stop 4. Adjust surface till Zero

How to level a frame on wall?

  1. Select 'Wall' Mode: Ensure the 'Wall' button is active in the mode slider.
  2. Surface Wall 0.0° Zero Start
  3. Place Device & click Start: place your smartphone or tablet upright against the vertical surface you want to measure and press start.
  4. Surface Wall 5.0° Zero Start Picture Frame or Television to level
  5. Observe Readings & Adjust Surface:The wall bubble and degree display will show the vertical tilt in real-time. Adjust the item or your device until the wall bubble is centered and the degree reading is 0.0°.
  6. Surface Wall 0.0° Zero Start Picture Frame or Television to level

How to Improve Measurement Accuracy

You can significantly improve the accuracy of your measurement and compensate for sensor bias by using a simple two-step calibration method. This process effectively cancels out most of the phone's inherent zero-offset error.

  1. First Measurement: Place your phone on the surface you want to measure and note the angle reading (e.g. 0.8°).
  2. Second Measurement: Without lifting it, rotate your phone exactly 180° in the same spot and take a second reading (e.g. -1.0°).
  3. Calculate the True Offset: The true angle is the average of these two measurements. For example: (0.8 + (-1.0)) / 2 = -0.1°. This shows your surface is very close to level, with a small offset. A perfectly calibrated level would read 0.5° and -0.5° in this example if the surface had a 0.5° tilt.

Use the 180° rotation method to cancel out sensor errors and achieve a more accurate measurement.

Adjusting for Protruding Cameras

Modern smartphones often have camera bumps that prevent them from lying perfectly flat. This can interfere with accurate measurements, but you can easily correct for it using the Zero button, as illustrated below.

  1. Place and Observe: Position your phone on the surface. Notice that the camera bump creates a slight, stable tilt, showing a non-zero reading.
  2. Press Zero: Tap the Zero button. This instructs the spirit level to treat the phone's current tilted position as the new "0°" reference point.
  3. Measure Accurately: The display will now read 0°. The effect of the camera bump is cancelled out, allowing you to take accurate measurements relative to the surface.
5° Device reads tilt on flat surface PRESS "ZERO" 0° Bump is now ignored

Use "Zero" to compensate for the tilt caused by a camera bump.

What Can You Use a Spirit Level For?

An online spirit level is a handy tool for a variety of tasks:

  • Hanging Pictures: Make sure your photos and artwork are perfectly straight.
  • Assembling Furniture: Ensure tables, chairs, and other furniture are stable and level.
  • Leveling Appliances: Prevent washing machines from vibrating and ensure refrigerators run efficiently.
  • Construction and Carpentry: Check that walls are plumb and floors are level.
  • Photography: Avoid crooked shots by leveling your camera on a tripod.

Frequently Asked Questions

Grant sensor access, press Start Measuring, and place your device on the surface. For flat surfaces, use 'Surface Mode'. For vertical edges, use 'Wall Mode'. The bubble shows the angle, and the numeric display gives you a precise reading.

The accuracy depends on your device's accelerometer quality. For most DIY and hobby tasks, it's highly accurate. For high-precision jobs, a dedicated calibrated spirit level is recommended. Use the 180° rotation calibration method for improved accuracy.
